These firearms were Samuel Colt's answer to the demand of a growing civilian market for a light handgun. They found much favour with gamblers, prospectors, and "men of change" for whom the dragoon models were, over all, much too heavy and oversized. Many settlers on the Oregon Trail, as well as soldiers of the Civil War, chose these revolvers as a fast handling back-up pocket gun. The Wells Fargo Company and the Pony Express had a preference for the snag free handling of the leverless option found on Baby Dragoon and Wells Fargo models.
